Sometimes, creating change begins with a conversation.
Before a student plants a tree, learns how to properly manage waste, or takes part in a climate action project, there is often a first step that happens behind the scenes: reaching out, listening, building relationships, and getting the right people on board.
At Konson Aid LBG, we believe that meaningful environmental action begins with education. Young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow; they are already capable of making a difference in the communities they live in today. It is with this belief that we began exploring the establishment of Eco-Clubs in selected schools, creating spaces where students can learn about the environment and develop a stronger sense of responsibility towards protecting it.
Starting with the Right Conversations
The first step was to engage with the relevant education authorities.
Our team visited the Ghana Education Service (GES) Dodowa District Office to introduce the Eco Clubs initiative and formally seek the District’s support in connecting Konson Aid with potential partner schools.
The engagement provided an opportunity to share our vision and discuss how the initiative could complement efforts to encourage environmental awareness and climate-related activities among students.
Following the initial engagement, the District Office welcomed the initiative and expressed interest in collaborating on activities focused on climate and environmental awareness.
Taking the Conversation to Schools
With the necessary engagement with the education authorities underway, attention turned to selected schools.
In the Shai Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region, Ayikuma R/C Basic School and Asebi D/A Basic School were identified as potential partner schools. Further discussions were planned with the leadership of the schools as we explored the possibility of introducing Eco Clubs and creating opportunities for students to participate in environmental activities.
In the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region, our team also engaged with Aputuogya D/A JHS and Esereso Akasanim D/A Primary School after obtaining the necessary approval from the relevant District Education Office.
The response from the schools was encouraging. School leadership welcomed the initiative and expressed their willingness to support the establishment of Eco-Clubs within their schools.
For us, these conversations were more than just formal introductions. They were an opportunity to listen, understand the schools’ environments, and begin building the relationships needed to make an initiative like this meaningful.
Why Eco Clubs Matter
Environmental issues can sometimes feel distant to young people when they are discussed only in classrooms or through textbooks. Eco Clubs can help bring these conversations closer to students’ everyday lives.
Through activities, discussions and practical learning, Eco Clubs can give students the opportunity to better understand issues such as climate change, environmental conservation, waste management and sustainable living.
More importantly, they can encourage young people to see themselves as part of the solution.
A student who learns why protecting the environment matters today may become the person who influences their family, school or community tomorrow.
That is the kind of long-term impact we hope to support.
Laying the Groundwork for What Comes Next
The engagements with the Ghana Education Service and the selected schools marked an important first step for Konson Aid’s Eco Clubs initiative.
While the full implementation of the Eco Clubs was not completed during this phase, the groundwork was established through stakeholder engagement, school visits and discussions with school leadership.
These early conversations have reinforced an important lesson for us: sustainable change takes collaboration.
It requires schools, communities, education authorities, organizations and young people to come together with a shared understanding of the challenge and a willingness to act.
